More About This Matter
The plea filed by the medical students in the country in the Supreme Court seeking postponement of the NEET PG exam is due to various reasons. However, the primary reasons are:
- The medical students are demanding the exam’s postponement, citing anunfavorable gap between the NEET PG 2022 exam and the NEET PG 2021 counseling. They have been informedthat the exam date, which is scheduled for 21st May, is not appropriate for the students.
- Another reason is that a greater number of interns are now working in hospitals on COVID-19 duties. Due to this they may not be able to complete their internship on time. And that will make them not eligible to appear for the NEET PG 2022 exam if the exam is conducted on 21st May 2022.
As per the reports, the students have requested to postpone the exam by 8 to 10 weeks. Well, till now, the authorities have not given any comment on the ongoing postponement issue. The demand for postponement is getting louder with time, and the latest step taken by the SC can bring a new turn to this matter.
The Plea to Be Heard on 13th May by the SC Bench
As per the latest report, the plea has been accepted by the Supreme Court. An SC bench led by Justice DY Chandrachud would list the matter for urgent hearing. It is expected that after this, it can be confirmed whether the exam will be held on a previously set date or whether the authorities should change the date or not. As per a report, Rakesh Khanna, Senior Advocate, earlier brought this matter to the attention of the Supreme Court bench.
The Postponement Row
Forthe last four to five weeks, medical students across the country have been demanding to change the date for the NEET PG 2022 exam. Medical aspirants have said that the current exam data, which is 21st May 2022, falls very close to the counseling process of the NEET PG 2021, and the process has not been completed yet. Due to this, the medical candidates are demanding postponement of the PG medical entrance exam as it will help the candidates who have not been allotted seats to get a chance to reappear for the exam. If they follow the current timelines, the medical students participating in the counseling process will not get enough time to prepare for the exam.
However, under the current timelines, those aspirants who are participating in the ongoing counseling process will not be able to prepare for the exam.
Experts’ Opinions on This Matter
Dr. Manish, an Ex-member of the FORDA- Federation of Resident Doctors Association, has said that postponing the exam may lead to a shortage of doctors, and the solution can be extending the counseling dates. On the other hand, commenting on this matter, the AIMSA- All India Medical Student’s Association National Vice-President, Dr. Peeyush Singh, has said that it would be better if the authorities could postpone the exam instead of extending the counseling dates. This will allow the interns to appear for the exams. Well, it is a fact that there will be a manpower shortage, but postponing the NEET PG 2022 exam by around 8 to 10 weeks would not create a big issue. After the admission of a new batch, the current batch will then be promoted.
What about the effect of postponement on the academic cycle? It can be said that the current academic cycle has been disturbed. In the last few years, the NEET PG 2022 entrance exam has been postponing for several times. So, another change by a few weeks may not change much in the academic cycle. Some students may feel disappointed and annoyed if the exam postponed, but this is the time when the authorities need to think for everyone, informed Dr. Peeyush.
The experts’ reconsideration for exam postponement has been sent to the ministry, and they are currently looking into that matter. However, all are now waiting for the hearing of the Supreme Court as it may greatly influence the matter.
